What is DMT?
 
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring tryptamine alkaloid, structurally related to serotonin and melatonin. It is found in many plants and in trace amounts in the human body. Pharmacologically, DMT is a powerful serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonist, also active at 5-HT1A and sigma-1 receptors. When smoked or injected, it acts within seconds and lasts 10–30 minutes. When
consumed orally with MAO inhibitors (as in ayahuasca), it lasts 4–6 hours.
 
Acute Effects
• Psychological: Intense visual and auditory hallucinations, complex fractal imagery, sense of ego dissolution, and encounters with entities or alternate realms.
• Emotional: Can bring euphoria, unity, and awe, or fear and disorientation depending on context. • Somatic: Increased heart rate and blood pressure, dilated pupils, tremors, nausea (especially in ayahuasca).
• Neurological: Heightened brain
connectivity and disruption of the default mode network (ego-related functions).
 
Medical & Therapeutic Uses
Modern research explores DMT for depression, PTSD, addiction, and end-of-life anxiety. Its ultra-short duration makes it ideal for highly contained therapeutic sessions. DMT appears to destabilize rigid brain networks, enhance neuroplasticity, and allow re-examination of trauma or maladaptive thought patterns.
Indigenous Uses
For centuries, Amazonian groups like the Shipibo and Quechua have used ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi vine + Psychotria viridis leaves) for healing and spiritual purposes. It treats illness by restoring balance between body, community, and spirit, and facilitates communication with ancestors and nature. Rituals involve shamans, icaros (healing songs), and dietary practices. Other traditions include snuffs
like yopo (Anadenanthera) for communal healing and divination.

Prepare your setting. Peaceful, private, quiet space. No interruptions.
Set an intention. Something gentle like “Let me be open” or “Help me surrender.”
Clear your schedule. Peak = 15–30 min. Integration lasts hours or days.
Integrate afterward. Journal, talk, meditate, or walk. Growth happens here. 
 
THE DON’TS: 
Don’t mix with other substances. Avoid stimulants & alcohol.
Don’t use in a dark headspace. It amplifies what’s there.
Don’t do it alone (first time). Even pros benefit from a sitter.
Don’t underestimate it. Short ≠ easy. It’s ego-dissolution, not a party. 
Don’t drive or handle sharp objects. Wait a few hours. Rest.
Don’t chase the high. Re-dosing too soon = confusion & overwhelm.

Checklist:
■ Stay sober and grounded. 
■ Safe environment: clear floor, dim lights, silence phones. ■Gentle reassurance if they’re scared.
■ Help them lie/sit safely.
■ Don’t touch unless necessary. 
■ Water, tissues, blanket handy. 
■ Stay after and be present. 
In the case of an emergency (not breathing, seizures, etc.) call 911. Stay calm.
